and Kevin Crossley-Holland
Guest: Berlie Doherty

Residential: £495 (single); £435 (shared) SHARED ACCOMMODATION ONLY

Myths, legends and folk-tales attract and nourish many writers because they are simple and cross-cultural, timeless and profound.  In this practical course, Kevin and Malachy, two of our finest writers in the field, explore ways of understanding and retelling them and of creating original stories and poems inspired by them.

KEVIN CROSSLEY-HOLLAND is author of the Arthur trilogy, Gatty's Tale and Waterslain Angels, and of The Hidden Roads, a memoir of childhood.  Winner of the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Award, his reworkings of traditional tale include Beowulf, The Penguin Book of Norse Myths and The Magic Lands: British and Irish Folk-Tales.  Poet and librettist, he is patron of the Society for Storytellers and of Publishing House Me and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

MALACHY DOYLE first came to Tŷ Newydd in 1996, on a course run by Kevin called Writing for Children: A Tale Retold.  Since then he's had 70 books published, in 25 languages, very many of which draw on folk tale.  His retellings include the award-winning Tales from Old Ireland (Barefoot) and The Barefoot Book of Fairy Tales. His most recent books include Hen's Cake (Simon and Schuster), Charlie is My Darling (Orchard) and Swap (Pont). www.malachydoyle.co.uk
